Florentine barn conversion finished with green details

In this week’s comments update, readers are discussing the conversion of a Florentine barn into a compact home by Italian studio Fōntego Architettura.

Called Fienile N, the two-storey, 80-square-metre home was finished with decorative geometric window screens and mint-green cabinets that echo the tones of the surrounding landscape.

“Lovely minimalist structure!”

Commenters were smitten. “How impressively pleasant and unobtrusive a house can be,” reflected Winterberg. “The world needs more of that,” they suggested.

“The locale and the view asked for this conversion,” wrote Marius. “Cute place,” they added.

“Nice job,” said Bobinrsi, while JZ called it a “lovely minimalist structure!”

For Don Bronkema, “green is such a relief in a world of beige!”

Slippers made from dust
Slippers made from dust showcase “meaningful” use for household waste

“Next will be drain hair plaited into mirkin”

Dezeen readers were taken aback by a pair of slippers made using dust collected from a vacuum cleaner by Ravensbourne University graduate Rahat Rai.

Not everyone could get behind the idea. “Like I’m going to recycle my dust… I think not!” said Jess.

The Truth agreed, writing “no thanks – however well-intentioned the environmental upcycling of dust, these look like soiled slippers that had been discarded in a landfill, but were pulled back out years later and re-used.”

“Next will be drain hair plaited into mirkin,” predicted Harry Belafonte 3rd.

Tesla retro-futuristic diner Los Angeles
Stantec designs “classic American diner” for Tesla in Los Angeles

“Trying too hard to be cool, ends up dull”

Also causing a stir in the comments section this week was the news that Stantec has designed a “retro-futuristic” diner in Los Angeles for Tesla, with meals served in Cybertruck packaging and parking reserved for electric vehicles only.

“Looks really naff – so perfectly on brand for Tesla,” scorned RK.

Sorperdida was similarly scathing, writing “‘tasteful’ architecture on par with the junk food served inside.”

“Trying too hard to be cool, ends up being dull,” determined Oliber Tweet. Meanwhile, Steve Hassler chimed in and said “I’d take a classic over this anytime.”

Going against the general consensus, Jb wrote “hooray for style”. “Retro-futurism still has great depths to plumb and deserves to be flaunted more often,” they suggested.
