Local architecture studio MACH has completed Calasparra Town Hall in Spain, using red textured render and pink-toned concrete to give the building a welcoming feel.

Designed for Calasparra City Council, the 1,120-square-metre building provides private and public spaces on a site adjacent to the city’s municipal theatre and a market square, and aims to help create a new civic centre.

“One of the key opportunities of the site was its potential to consolidate this part of Calasparra as the new civic centre of the town, bringing together public life and institutional activity while offering new collective spaces for the community,” Barcelona-based MACH told Dezeen.

“The building acts simultaneously as an observer of everyday civic life and as an architectural presence that frames and enhances the collective activities taking place around the square,” it added.

According to MACH, the town hall’s distinctive red colour is a nod to the history of the wider region, Mucia, in particular a shade used for the iconic kiosks found in the nearby port city of Cartagena, known as Cartagena red.

Textured render in this deep shade of red covers the town hall’s entire exterior, while inside, its concrete structure has been left exposed with pale pink pigment.

“The materiality of the structure expresses permanence, robustness, and adaptability, while at the same time conveying a warm and welcoming presence toward the city,” said the studio.

“The facade is understood as a large urban garment that wraps around and embraces the structure through a deep Cartagena red or crimson tone,” it added.
