Italian studio Stefano Boeri Architetti has unveiled plans to transform a historic transportation depot into a greenery-covered public space in Rome‘s Della Vittoria neighbourhood.

Approved by the Rome City Council, the regeneration project will overhaul the existing Deposit delle Vittorie depot, which was built in the 1900s and had stood abandoned for almost 20 years, turning it into a cultural, educational and commercial hub.

Its 16,000-square-metre plot will include a central public plaza conceptualised by Stefano Boeri Architetti as a “small city” of commercial spaces, along with an 8,000-square-metre rooftop garden.

Combining public services with green spaces, the studio sought to create an accessible and welcoming space for local residents.

“Our project for the Deposit delle Vittorie represents a virtuous example of urban regeneration, thanks to the balance achieved between the valorisation of a decommissioned and now privately owned urban infrastructure and the collective interests of the residents of a historic neighbourhood in the heart of Rome,” studio founder Stefano Boeri said.

At ground level, the inner courtyard of the former depot will connect to the surrounding city and function as a place of leisure for visitors.

Enclosing the courtyard will be commercial services and workspaces held within the site’s renovated buildings. Renders of the development reveal one-storey buildings wrapped with geometric facade detailing and glazed fronts lined with outdoor seating.
