Glass cladding has been applied to some of the lower portions of the reinforced concrete structure, which reached its 100th floor this week.

Expected to be completed in 2028, Jeddah Tower is set to surpass Dubai’s Burj Khalifa to become the world’s tallest building. It will also be the world’s first building to reach a kilometre in height.

Designs for Jeddah Tower were first revealed in 2011, and it broke ground in 2013, but a series of complications halted its construction. These include financial issues, the Covid-19 pandemic, and technical challenges related to weak soil.

Progress also paused when the contractor, Binladin Group, was taken off the project due to the company owner being arrested as part of 2017 corruption purges in Saudi Arabia, which also saw the project’s developer, Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, detained.
